Hololive-Bilibili controversy

The Hololive-Bilibili controversy is a series of incidents where Cover Corporation, owners of the VTuber talent agency Hololive Production, faced issues with the Chinese video sharing platform Bilibili. This is meant to be straightforward with no CIA-backed Sinophobic warmongering.

Timeline

2019

  • 2019-03-31 - Minato Aqua was discussing bubble milk tea in her evening stream and she read a comment mentioning that it originated from Taiwan.1) She immediately postponed her late night stream,2) but her ban was lifted after a week and there was no uproar since you could argue that it was a slip of tongue and that she meant the Taiwan province instead.

2020

  • 2020-06-11: Yuzuki Choco borrowed a user-submitted multiple-choice question3) for her quiz stream4) asking: “Which of the following countries do not have cats in their zodiac?” and had Mongolia, Tibet, Thailand, and Vietnam as possible answers.5) “Tibet” triggered the ban and people flamed Cover quite fast, so Cover issued an apology that afternoon6) and her ban was lifted after a month.
  • 2020-08-30: (Mano Aloe retirement. This event has nothing to do with Bilibili or China in any way.)
  • 2020-09-24: Akai Haato brought up the composition of her audience and while the page wasn't actually shown, she pulled up and read off a YouTube Studio page that listed the ROC separate from the PRC7)8)9) which got her stream banned.
  • 2020-09-25: Kiryu Coco actually showed this page on a pre-recorded AsaCoco stream10) which netted a one-month ban that became permanent. On YouTube, the stream would temporarily become private and said content was cut out.11) As a result, Hololive and Holostars members (except Hololive CN) were restricted from streaming on Bilibili that day, while YouTube streams saw member-only chatrooms. However, Cover's inaction on both of these situations had allowed them to ferment over the weekend.
  • 2020-09-27:
    • 7:30pm - Cover issues a statement apologizing for the “inappropriate content”, stating that they respect China's sovereignty and the One-China policy, previously outlined by the Japan–China Joint Communiqué and Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and China, then mentions that proper disciplinary action will be made public at a later date.12)
    • 7:45pm - The official Chinese and Japanese statements are published, revealing that Haato and Coco will be suspended for three weeks.13)14)15) These statements didn't go over well due to its wording16) and how the One-China policy was only brought up in China. In response, their certified subtitling groups disbanded, removed contributions, and/or froze subtitling efforts.17)
  • 2020-09-30: Hololive officials published statements elaborating the prior statements and discussed how they plan on going forward, but only published them on their website and Twitter.18)19)20)
  • 2020-10-18: With Haato and Coco's three-week suspension over, Hololive officials had made another statement which also addressed the recent harassment towards one of their talents.21)22)23)24)
  • 2020-10-19: Haato and Coco would both tweet about their return the following morning,25)26)27) but the official subtitling groups either dissolved,28) refused to back down and were committed to stop all of Hololive activities (excludes Hololive CN),29)30) or just turned to piracy and became unofficial.31)32)33)34)

Hololive CN protests and subsequent dissolution

  • 2020-10-20: Hololive CN members removed information about Hololive from their Bilibili profiles.
  • 2020-10-22: All members of Hololive CN would proceed to announce on stream that Hololive CN was disbanding and that they would allegedly become independent Virtual YouTubers.
  • 2020-11-12: Hololive announced when five Hololive CN members would graduate.35)
  • 2020-11-16: Hololive would clarify that all six Hololive CN members are planned to graduate and that Artia's graduation would occur sooner.36)
    • Civia: 2020-11-18
    • Artia: 2020-12-19 → 2020-11-19
    • Spade Echo: 2020-11-21
    • Yogiri: 2020-12-20
    • Doris: 2020-12-26
    • Rosalyn: 2020-12-27

“AsaCoco” (あさココ) was a satirical, pre-recorded news stream that Kiryu Coco aired in the mornings with the purpose to cheer people up. It was occasionally used to lighten up other Virtual YouTubers after their mistakes. However, she actually showed the page that listed the PRC and ROC separate, forcing the lighthearted joke to become an unmistakable act of aggression that they couldn't possibly weasel out of.

In the fifth paragraph, the first issue was over “leaking confidential information” from YouTube Studio, but the second issue is worded differently depending on the version read. The Chinese statement states that “their actions had hurt the feelings of people in certain areas”, while the Japanese statement states that “their actions were inconsiderate of certain nationalities” with “nationality” being more loaded or counterproductive.
