Owata

Jinsei Owata (人生オワタ),1) or Owata (オワタ), is an AA character and kaomoji that's normally used in an ironic,2) self-deprecatory manner to express despair. This definition mainly caught on at 2channel in November 2005 and somehow resulted in a variety of text artwork.

Summary

As an AA character, you'll mostly see him with a sign pointing to “Jukai” (樹海, lit. “Sea of Trees”), which is a local nickname for Aokigahara or “Suicide Forest” near Mount Fuji. For some reason, Jinsei Owata functions a lot like Mega Man, exploding into bullseye symbols () and emitting this “tiun-tiun-tiun” (ティウンティウンティウン) sound upon death. It's probably why Jinsei Owata no Daibouken exists.

“Jinsei Owata” (人生オワタ) means “[my] life is over”, “[my] life is ruined”, or “[my] life is finished”. If you're feeling extra spicy, you could also translate it to “I'm screwed”, “I'm ruined”, or “I'm done for”.
2)
The “\(^o^)/” kaomoji was an SNS emoticon that was originally used to express joy and pleasure, giving the impression that it's shouting “banzai” (バンザイ) for something worthy of celebration.
