It's a popular video sharing and live streaming service that left a massive impact on the internet, marking the end of the Flash era. However, this immense popularity has also been a detriment since the platform has a strict [[wp>YouTube copyright issues|copyright system]] and tends to 'demonetize' videos, which can make it an unreliable source of income, thus why content creators will often rely on membership platforms to make up for any losses.

===== Live streaming =====

However, their service was initially shoddy, secretly lagged,((The streaming service on YouTube would lag behind and hide the fact that they weren't keeping up with the live stream. This isn't as big of a problem now, compared to 2017 where you'd have to wait hours for your chat message to be read, but the issue still occasionally pops up every now and then.)) and it doesn't advertise streams well, due to the 'algorithm', notification clutter,((YouTube will normally try to send you a deluge of notifications for almost everything (e.g. new videos, new comments, recommended videos), so most streaming notifications fail to stand out.)) and the fact that it wasn't their main feature, so it isn't recommended unless you already have a community or connections.

The Verge.)) we suddenly saw YouTube entering the 2020s as a noteworthy live streaming contender that could rival [[Twitch]],(([[https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/youtube-gaming-2020/|"2020 is YouTube Gaming's biggest year, ever: 100B watch time hours"]] (December 8, 2020). YouTube Blog.)) far exceeding [[Facebook]] and [[wp>Kick (service)|Kick]]. It isn't clear how this happened, though one could assume that the pandemic allowed YouTube to reach its full potential with live streaming, so it isn't just that website that people come to watch clips, highlights, and past live streams on.

==== Super Chat ====
On January 12, 2017, the 'Super Chat' feature was introduced,(([[https://www.theverge.com/2017/1/12/14249630/youtube-super-chat-pay-pin-comments-live-stream|"YouTube launches Super Chat, a tool that lets you pay to pin comments on live streams"]] (January 12, 2017). The Verge.)) which allows users to pay to have their own message highlighted and temporarily pinned in a ticker if they pay $5.00 minimum.
