Caved!!!!

“Caved(Excavated)!!!!” was an Engrish term for an ancient Touhou Project meme where Keine Kamishirasawa, a were-hakutaku, would be summoned to comedically ram her hakutaku form's horns into someone's anus. It's quite old nowadays, so it doesn't really come up anymore.

Summary

Of course, the joke of 'ramming things into someone's anus' is obvious, but there was also the added context that 'horu' (掘る, lit. “dig” or “excavate”) is Japanese slang for gay anal sex.1) With the primitive state of machine translations and zero cultural context, Nifty would translate 'horareta!!!!' (掘られた!!!!) to 'caved!!!!', so the Japanese community was stuck with this mistranslation until the joke finally ran its course.

The likely logic behind 'caved' is that one definition of 'cave' is 'to hollow out' (凹みます, hekomimasu), but the problem is that this definition is obscure, unless you're 'caving' in Minecraft, so most native speakers would think of 'collapse' (cave-in) or 'surrender' and become confused. Of course, these details don't really matter if you know that the intent is 'gratuitous English'.

Notes

  • Personally, I'd translate 'horaneta' (掘られた) as 'excavated', especially when 'kussakuki' (掘削機) is normally be translated as 'excavator' anyways. There's also 'dug', but it isn't as versatile.
  • At some point, 'Caved!!!!' used to be the default message that would be shown when a reply would be deleted in Touhou Project boards on Shitaraba, mimicking the 'a bone' (あぼーん) on 2channel.
