HelioHost

HelioHost is a web hosting service founded on March 2, 2005, shortly after their forums.1)2) The service is primarily maintained by a group of volunteer administrators, and they rely on community donations as well the advertising revenue from their support pages.

Summary

The service offers three virtual servers for customers to host their website on, but customers are limited to registering one website on one of these virtual servers which are detailed in the list below. Registration for these servers are opened daily at 00:00 UTC and you can check availability as well as their recent uptime on the HelioHost Server Monitor, but you can make a small donation to be guaranteed a spot.

  • Ricky - The antiquated server that tries to stabilize itself by limiting what scripts can be used.
  • Johnny - The antiquated server that allows dangerous scripts, but suffers from a lot of downtime.
  • Tommy - The server that tries to be fast and stable, intended for live websites with an audience.

Server details

HelioHost owns physical servers within the Hurricane Electric datacenter in California which are used for their virtual servers. You can read more about them on the HelioHost Wiki.

Notes

  • The websites are hosted on Linux, can be managed with Plesk, and access to the user's home directory with FTP, SFTP, and FTPS is provided.
  • If you don't know how to upload files, their wiki has a page on it. If you're using FTP, you can use your subdomain as the host name, port 21, and login with your cPanel account details.
