Utopia

Utopia” (乌有之乡, Wūyǒu(Nonexistent) Zhīxiāng(Location)) is the community-managed Chinese political and economic bulletin board which favors Marxist-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought. The bulletin board and bookstore of the same name were co-founded by Hán Déqiáng1) and Fàn Jǐnggāng2) in 2003.3)

History

This section could be written better, with context of former “Old Left” publications in the Maoflag article.

In the past, Utopia had a bulletin board at “wyzxsx.com” and an online bookstore at “wyzxsd.com”, but it was forced to close in 2012 as the community supported Bó Xīlái,4) a controversial revivalist5) that would be expelled after the Wáng Lìjūn incident.6)7) Nowadays, the online newsletter at “wyzxwk.com” remains which does accept user-written articles, but the articles must manually be approved to appear.

Notes

  • The website's original name was “Wūtuōbāng” (乌托邦), the loanword for “Utopia”, but the SAIC had rejected the name. As a result, they settled on “Wūyǒu Zhīxiāng” (乌有之乡).
    • Han acknowledges the irony of calling it a “Utopia” when Marx was historically known to criticize the concept of utopian socialism, asserting that they thought it would be slandered.9)
  • Each article has six reactions: “moved” (感动, gǎndòng), “happy” (喜悦, xǐyuè), “support” (支持, zhīchí), “absurd” (荒谬, huāngmiù), “sad” (难过, nánguò), and “angry” (愤怒, fènnù).

Bó Xīlái was known for his Chongqing model and Red culture movement, but the scandal effectively ended his political career with the 18th National Congress electing Xí Jìnpíng into power in 2012.
