Touhou Game Title Theory
The “Touhou Game Title Theory” is a well-known Touhou Project theory assuming that every game's title is related to the final boss or bosses in some way. Of course, the theory isn't a perfect, but ZUN did acknowledge it in Strange Creators in Outer World.1)
Analysis
Game title | Boss name(s) | Notes |
---|---|---|
靈異伝 Reiiden | 博麗靈夢 Hakurei Reimu | Reimu is the protagonist. All the bosses in Touhou Reiiden have romanized names, thus no kanji notation. |
封魔録 Fuumaroku | 霧雨魔理沙 Kirisame Marisa | |
魅魔 Mima |
||
夢時空 Yumejikuu | 岡崎夢美 Okazaki Yumemi | |
幻想郷 Gensoukyou | 幻月 Gengetsu | |
怪綺談 Kaikidan | 神綺 Shinki | |
Windows Era | ||
紅魔郷 Koumakyou | レミリア・スカーレット Remiria Sukāretto | The kanji “紅” can be translated as “Scarlet”. The game has a heavy scarlet red theme: “Koumakan” (紅魔館, lit. “Scarlet Devil Mansion”), “Koumu Ihen” (紅霧異変, lit, “Scarlet Mist Incident”), etc. Also, “scarlet” is in the subtitle, “the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil”. |
フランドール・スカーレット Furandōru Sukāretto |
||
妖々夢 Youyoumu | 魂魄妖夢 Konpaku Youmu | “々” is a kanji iteration mark, which is why “妖” (you) is repeated in the game title and “幽” (yu) is repeated in Yuyuko's name. |
西行寺幽々子 Saigyouji Yuyuko |
||
萃夢想 Suimusou | 伊吹萃香 Ibuki Suika | |
永夜抄 Eiyashou | 八意永琳 Yagokoro Eirin | The game's theme is that it's a “long night” (永い夜). |

風神録 Fuujinroku | 東風谷早苗 Kochiya Sanae | |

||
緋想天 Hisouten | 比那名居天子 Hinanawi Tenshi | Tenshi's sword is the “Sword of Hisou” (緋想の剣). |
地霊殿 Chireiden | 古明地さとり Komeiji Satori | “Chireiden” (地霊殿, lit. “Earth Spirit Place”) is also the name of the residence in the story. Satori is the fourth stage boss, but she is the head of Chireiden. |
霊烏路空 Reiuji Utsuho |
||
古明地こいし Komeiji Koishi |
||
星蓮船 Seirensen | 寅丸星 Toramaru Shou | “Seirensen” (聖輦船, lit. “Palanquin Ship”) is also the name of the ship in the story. |
聖白蓮 Hijiri Byakuren |
||
神霊廟 Shinreibyou | 豊聡耳神子 Toyosatomimi no Miko | |
心綺楼 Shinkirou | 秦こころ Hata no Kokoro | “Shinkirou” (心綺楼) is also the name of Kokoro's play. |
輝針城 Kishinjou | 少名針妙丸 Sukuna Shinmyoumaru | “Kishinjou” (輝針城, lit. “Shining Needle Castle”) is also the name of the castle, and the story's mastermind is “Kijin Seija” (鬼人正邪). |
紺珠伝 Kanjuden | ヘカーティア・ラピスラズリ Hekātia Rapisurazuri | The kanji “紺” means dark blue, Lapis Lazuli is a blue gem, and the “Ultramarine Orb Elixir” (紺珠の薬, Kanju no Kusuri) is said to be used in pointdevice mode. |
天空璋 Tenkuushou | 摩多羅隠岐奈 Matara Okina | An exception. The “Heavenly Jade Dipper” (天空璋, Tenkuushou) refers to the “Seven Stars of the Northern Dipper” (北斗七星, Hokuto Shichisei) or the Big Dipper, and the constellation is present on Okina's tabard. Also, the subtitle is “Hidden Star in Four Seasons”. The kanji “隠” means “hidden”. |
鬼形獣 Kikeijuu | 驪駒早鬼 Kurokoma Saki | In addition, Keiki's name technically swaps “ki” and “kei” around. |
虹龍洞 Kouryuudou | 飯綱丸龍 Iizunamaru Megumu | |
天弓千亦 Tenkyuu Chimata | “Tenkyuu” (天弓) is a synonym for “Kou” (虹), both meaning “rainbow”. |
