Desiredriven

Desiredriven is a Homestuck-style Touhou Project fan game, developed in RPG Maker VX Ace by the “Saxmasterz” team, and published Act 1 on February 9, 2013.1) There were plans for more acts, but it's probably safe to say that it's been cancelled, especially with the recent drama.

In its current state, Desiredriven is a game with a rough playtime estimate of three to six hours, which mainly depends on on how fast you can read since it is a text-heavy game that parodies a text-heavy webcomic, though it does have some interactive elements.

Summary

The story begins on December 13th,2) which is Byakuren's 16th birthday, and follows 13 teenage characters who play a game called Skima. In short, Act 1 walks you through each character's introduction and how they join the game, meaning that you'll have them prototype their kernelsprite and obtain a cruxite artifact in order to enter the medium, then it ends on a tense cliffhanger where Tojiko confronts Seiga for killing her.

Explanations

Handle significance

While the online handles in Homestuck usually follow the G-C-A-T naming convention, referencing DNA sequencing, the online handles in Desiredriven chose to follow the B-D-H-V naming convention, which is theorized to be the phonetic abbreviation for Bodhisattva. The significance of the secret online handles in relation to the B-D-H-V naming convention is currently unknown.

Controversy

The graphics artist for Desiredriven was a Filipino artist named “CaptainSki”10) who used to be considerably popular in the Touhou Project community, but had a lot of baggage11) and reports of cult-like clique drama. Recently, she worked on the role-playing game, Heartbeat, which faced controversy in 2019 over transphobic statements from her Russian girlfriend.12)13)14) She didn't completely disappear, however.

NOVEMBER 10, 1992.

Bugs and glitches

  • If you skip the save in the early scenes, you may get a transparent manual stuck on your screen.
  • After you prototype Ichirin's sprite, it's possible for the cursor to get softlocked in the garden.

Notes

  • Desiredriven starts off on Disc 2, which does implicate the existence of a Disc 1 and a prior session.
  • All the secret Skype messages are the same in every iteration of their respective household.
  • Skima is a pun on “sukima” (スキマ, lit. “gap”), a term that one may associate with Yukari Yakumo.
    • While the logo does have Byakuren and Futo's colors, I wouldn't read too much into it.
  • For the quote misattribution gag, a Confucius quote is misattributed to Hotei (Bùdài), which may be a joke on how Confucianism is the third teaching, next to Buddhism and Taoism.
  • If you have a sharp eye, the mischievous crow has three legs, and the satoris are cherub analogues.
    • Koishi contacts Miko before Derse. Satori contacts Byakuren, as Miko messes with her home.
  • Tojiko is the only character with a known planet name: Land of Dawn and Thunder (LODAT).
  • Secret rooms can discovered by Miko in Scene 9 (behind a tower in Derse) and Mamizou in Scene 18 (enter the shack next to Mamizou's Cabin after the countdown timer hits 01:18).
    • “Yananaz” was a crack pairing with Yanana15) and Nazrin. You can find pixelated smut in Scene 18's secret room, depicting breastfeeding of some sort, but this is probably lost to time.
  • There are unused Desiredriven talksprites for Tojikosprite, Unzansprite, Nuesprite, and Chimerasprite.

2)
The text states that the month is “Shiwasu”, the old Japanese calendar name for December.
3)
This sprite doesn't officially have a name or text color, but we can assume the text was red.
4)
The dialogue calls her Sogasprite, but Tojikosprite just sounds better.
5) , 6)
Desiredriven uses an arranged version of “HEART” and “HALF” by group_inou, so no vocals.
7)
Only the first couple seconds of “Enter the Party” are used.
8)
This is probably just an emote, given the lack of morse code sounds. Otherwise, it just translates to “K”.
9)
A reference to Rollin Like a Redneck by Jawga Boyz.
10)
“Shepple” is her current name, while “CaptainSki” or “LittleShrimp” were her former names. At one point, the users on 4chan's /jp/ board gave her the traumatizing nickname of “LittleShit”.
11)
For instance, she's responsible for the mass hatred of “Walfas” (create.swf) in the late 2000s, a time when “cringe” was still a synonym for “wince”. Additionally, she allegedly scams kids on MMOs for money.
13)
"Don’t support Heartbeat RPG" (September 23, 2019). Tumblr.
15)
“Yanana” (やなな) is the unofficial mascot character for the Yanagase shopping district in Gifu. She has a bread-shaped cardboard head with “柳” written on it, antennae resembling street lights, and wears a mermaid-inspired outfit which is a reference to the mermaid statue within the district. Yanana was born on July 5, 2008 and retired on March 31, 2013, the month after Desiredriven's release.
