Koishi Komeiji's Heart-Throbbing Adventure

Koishi Komeiji's Heart-Throbbing Adventure (古明地こいしのドキドキ大冒険, Komeiji Koishi no DokiDoki Daibōken), commonly shortened to KoiDoki (こいドキ) or KKHTA, is a fan-made Touhou Project video series authored by “Sentakubune” (洗濯船)1) since June 28, 2009.

The series is commonly described as dark, edgy, and excessively violent, but with a method to the “madness”. On the other hand, it takes severe liberties with canon, hasn't aged well, and most fans seem like chuunibyou who are too young to understand the message.

Summary

This series features disturbing and graphic content. Some content warnings include: bloodshed, cannibalism, child abuse, decapitation, dismemberment, familial abandonment, implied rape, murder, physical and psychological torture, sexual assault, systematic genocide, etc.

Part 1–18

「帽子は私のお友達(ともだち)♡ 私に安らぎを与えてくるの」
“This hat is my friend♡ It helps me relax.”

The story begins on October 3rd, where Koishi thinks about fishing and nearly kills two people at Koumakan for a fishing rod. Satori arrives to stop Koishi, dragging her home and locking her up, then returns the next day to apologize. Being watched, Remilia sends her away, then Satori warns that Koakuma is not so innocent which agitates them. Satori briefly gets a clean shot at Koakuma, but Remilia decks her in the face.

Concurrently, Koishi escapes captivity, then chaos breaks out in Gensokyo at 4:25pm on October 4th, which prompts Yukari and Reimu to begin their investigation into Chireiden and Koumakan respectively. We get a montage of bloodshed and false memories as Satori begins her walk home. From here, Yukari mistook Koishi as the threat, neutralizes her, then Reisen2) catches Yukari off guard and executes her.

Koishi ends up borrowing Yukari's body, who is pressured by Yukari to check in on Reimu. As for Reimu, she finds Koakuma, then Udonge shows up to stop Reisen from ambushing her. Back at Chireiden, Satori finds the souls being redirected there, but she's interrupted by the Watatsuki Sisters who decide that she's a risk to their “Moonlight Descent Ceremony” (月影降臨術, Tsukikage Kōrin-jutsu) plan and neutralizes her.

By this point, we are shown how the satori got their bodies, Koishi's trauma, and how the invading Lunarians coerced them into their “absolute world peace” plan by turning every living being into third eyes. We're also told how the Lunarians abolished sorrows of the outside world, creating a madness-inflicting moonlight, which only affects Gensokyo, and Eirin hastily making a “rain of detoxification” before her ousting.

Final Part

「全てが開いた世界で‟カミ”に対抗出来(でき)るのは…‟閉じた恋の瞳”だけなのですから」
“The only thing that can oppose 'god' in a world where everything is open… is a 'closed eye of love'.”

The final part opens up with the Lunarians warning the outside world of an “imminent alien threat” before the story began. Koakuma flees to a “Vishoka”3) ship with Patchouli, then our protagonists encounter Toyohime at the Hakurei Shrine, making sure the Great Hakurei Barrier shatters by eliminating them. Curiously, Kaguya hands a detoxification vial to a helpless “Koishi Yakumo” and gives advice on how to defeat a god.

As foretold, the Great Hakurei Barrier shatters at 6:59pm on October 4th, and the Lunarians quickly assume the position of humanity's savior by sending Vishokas to eradicate Gensokyo's former inhabitants, who are now Kaiju, all while Koakuma harnesses their powers. Satori is taunted by Toyohime for raising Koishi, despite not being her sister, then Yorihime is killed after eliminating the final three kaiju.

With the perfect conditions achieved, Toyohime and the Lunarians blast the moon's eye open, turning every living being into third eyes. Seven years pass. On a snowy day in southern Germany, we find Koishi return home to Yukari, the two finally separated. Yukari can't help but grieve over the events, having survivor's guilt, and criticizes Koishi's escapism, insisting that Koishi closed her eye for selfish, manipulative reasons.

Her words ultimately tear into Koishi, who makes the decision to poke her third eye open with a glass shard. Yukari, flattered by Koishi's decision to face reality, finally decides to go on a walk with her.

Explanations

The rest of this article contains spoilers. I've written way too much here that it's a bit of a disservice if 75% of the page is under a spoiler tag.

Chronological summary

The story opens up with its spin on Japanese mythology, where Tsukiyomi becomes separated from her lover in the Giant Impact,9) creating the moon.10) Millions of years pass and we eventually arrive in the Common Era, where Eirin apparently gives birth to Kaguya's clone during The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, then they return in August.11) The clone's fate is unclear, with many believing Koishi is the clone.

Gensokyo is created in the late 19th century, then Sanae has her tragic backstory in the mid 20th century.12) We then return to the Lunarians embarking on a 380,000km trip to invade Earth in 1972,13) slowing once they're 400km away14) in 1982 and incidentally shred Koishi's body.15) From here, tragedy falls upon the two satoris, now strung into their plan in the early 1980s,16) and Koishi goes on a rampage.17)

Forty years have passed since the Lunarians brought world peace, reeducating the human race,18)19) and our three-day story begins. The Lunarians warn humanity about an imminent threat, while Koakuma and Reisen begin experimenting.20)21) For October 4th, Satori apologizes at 4:00pm (16:00),22) madness soaked Gensokyo at 4:25pm (16:25), then Flandre shatters the Great Hakurei Barrier at 6:59pm (18:59).23)

After the Lunarians systematically kill off Gensokyo's inhabitants in their Kaiju form, being hailed as saviors, they conclude their plan of reuniting Tsukuyomi with her lover and turning all living beings into third eyes. Seven years have passed since then. Koishi and a heavily weakened Yukari are shown alive and separated, reflecting on the tragedy that befell upon what used to be Gensokyo in southern Germany.

Madness

“War, conflict, oppression, discrimination, poverty, massacre, bullying, fighting, famine, disparity, madness, prejudice.”24)

As the Lunarian ceremony requires world peace, the Lunarians attempted to absolve mankind of its sorrows by trapping these emotions on the dark side of the moon,25) which had an unintended effect of allowing Gensokyo to absorb the “madness” (狂気, kyōki). Eirin creates the “rain of detoxification” as their temporary solution, but ultimately gets dismissed before she could figure out a proper solution for the madness.

Once the time came, the antagonists experiment on a fairy26)27) before unleashing madness on Gensokyo, turning its inhabitants violent while inflicting false memories (e.g. Cirno's inability to remember,28)29) Tewi believing she smashed Udonge's legs30) when that didn't happen,31)32) etc.). With the subsequent events, we are led to believe that this step of the plan was a Lunarian cover-up of sorts.

Notes

  • The point of Sanae's backstory is that it was meant to give an explanation for Sadistic Sanae, which was a popular fan interpretation at the time. However, it quickly fell out of popularity after Sanae's personality became more fleshed out in canon, causing the sequence to age rather poorly and come off as unnecessary filler that does not ward off the “senseless violence” accusations.
    • In general, Suwako and Kanako's roles are a hard sell. Suwako finds a dried-up Sanzu River with Kogasa after Sanae is killed, and Kanako just brings us to Toyohime at the Hakurei Shrine.
  • Furthermore, the series came from a time where fans believed the Watatsuki Sisters were unbeatable with their backstory and performance in the Touhou Bougetsushou series. However, recent Touhou Project works have slowly dismantled “power arguments” in the community, especially after Junko was added in Touhou Kanjuden, where she explicitly overthrows the Lunar Capital.
    • There's a common assumption that people who watch Koishi Komeiji's Heart-Throbbing Adventure before interacting with Touhou Bougetsushou are the ones blindly assuming that the Watatsuki Sisters are evil, but this isn't the series' fault and it dismisses the reality that Touhou Bougetsushou initially wasn't well-received in the Japanese community when the series first released.
    • Junko does make an appearance in Koishi Komeiji's Heart-Throbbing Adventure, but she's killed off in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.33)
      • Of course, the existence of a people's republic implies that socialism still exists, which begs the question: does the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and the GDR still exist in this timeline?
    • There's also the error of Renko and Merry existing in the present,34) but this is mostly bad timing as Sumireko didn't canonically exist until 10 months after the video was released.
  • Koishi with Yukari's body is officially named “Koishi Yakumo” (八雲こいし),35) though a five-year gap might have led some artists to name the fusion “Yukari Komeiji” (古明地ゆかり) instead.
  • In Part 13, the eyecatches with Koakuma and Mamizou are a blatant Kaitei Shujin reference.36)
  • During the grand fight at the Hakurei Shrine, the Dragon God strikes Yorihime's left eye as it attempts to descend37) before it is quickly removed. To reiterate, Yorihime's eye patch covers her left eye.
  • Kaguya's advice about a “Closed Eye of Love” (閉じた恋の瞳, Tojita Koi no Hitomi) is a reference to Koishi's title in Touhou Chireiden, which makes it seem like this was always the series' intention.
  • Yorihime's attempt at summoning a Norse god, but getting no response,38) implies that the gods have stopped existing, presumably because humans began worshiping the Lunarians instead.

1)
“Sentakubune” (洗濯船) is a reference to the Bateau-Lavoir (Laundry Boat) building in Paris.
2)
As a digression, for this specific article, “Reisen” (レイセン) will be used for the Reisen that the Watatsuki Sisters adopted, while “Udonge” (うどんげ) will be used for the normal Reisen that fled with Eirin.
3)
“Vishoka” (विशोका, Viśokā) is a Sanskrit word, meaning “without grief” or “without sorrow”, and refers to a state of mind that one achieves by controlling their thoughts. The word is mistranslated in English as “Vijoker” due to “Viśokā” becoming “Vijōkā” (ヴィジョーカー) when converted into Japanese.
4)
YouTube removed annotations in the late 2010s which created a need for re-uploads with new subtitles. I've decided to preserve the playlist as is to preserve the comments that existed at the time.
5)
YouTube decided to make all “Unlisted” videos uploaded before January 1, 2017 set to “Private” on July 23, 2021 as a part of their security update, so parts 1 and 3-7 ended up becoming private.
6)
This part was delayed for almost a month due to the 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami.
7)
“Saishūkai” (最終回, lit. “the final part”) means “final episode” (series finale) or “last part” in this instance. For some reason, the translators insist on using “Part 19” when it literally says "Part Final".
8)
This part takes place in Paris, but the November 2015 Paris attacks forced the episode to be delayed for six months in order to rework the story into Paris being evacuated.
9)
Yes, the Giant Impact is a real theory and not something that Neon Genesis Evangelion just made up.
12)
Sanae's backstory does not mention when it happens. I'd have to assume that it vaguely follows Sanae Moriya (born 1945) or some time before the Lunarian invasion as it'd be odd to have Sanae suffer after they achieve world peace, so I'm not sure what the estimate of 1980s were about.
14)
This means that the Lunarians traveled 379,600km in 10 years, finishing about 99.87% of the trip. We probably aren't meant to think about the speed as it implies that they were moving at 4.333km/h (2.693mph), below the average walking speed, but this also assumes that 1972 and 1982 aren't typos.
24)
The exact quote is slightly different, as it replaces the commas with “ni” (に) halfway, but I think it looks better with commas. The ruby is an added bonus for myself and readers who aren't well-versed in kanji.
