Nurupo

Nurupo (ぬるぽ), or Nullpo, is the Japanese abbreviation for the Java error message, NullPointerException (NPE). It was naturally used by Java programmers, then became associated with the AA call-and-response game between Mona and a hammer-wielding Morala.

Summary

The abbreviation may have emerged within IRC chatrooms where it became an in-joke among programmers coding online Java games, which were really fashionable at the time. At some point, it made its way onto 2channel's /prog/ board on June 20, 2002.¹⁾ This thread features Mona saying 'Nurupo' (ぬるぽ) and, within 2 minutes, Morala hits him with a hammer which forces Mona to exclaim 'Gah!' (ｶﾞｯ).
