Touhou Project Popularity Poll
The “Touhou Project Popularity Poll” (東方Project人気投票)1) refers to an unofficial Japanese-run popularity contest, held somewhat annually since 2003, for the Touhou Project series. It was founded by the Japanese Touhou Wiki, but is now run by an executive committee since 2015.
Most of these polls are typically held around February and you only need an email address to obtain a voter ID. That aside, it's believed to be the oldest unofficial event in the Touhou Project community as the first poll was held a year before the first Reitaisai convention.

"Orin was sacrificed..."
“Orin was sacrificed…” (お燐は犠牲になったのだ・・・, Orin wa giseininatta noda…) was a cheap joke from the 7th Touhou Project Popularity Poll, noting that the Chireiden house of Touhou Chireiden had a popularity boost into the Top 25 except for Orin who fell into the Aki Sandwich below Parsee. It's believed that her status of “newcomer bait” wore off and that she lacked content.

Popularity Poll Sandwiches
There are a couple of “sandwiches” that people have noticed over the years: the “Scarlet Sandwich” (スカーレットサンド, Sukāretto Sando) with Remilia and Flandre, the “YukaYuyu Sandwich” (ゆかゆゆサンド) with Yukari and Yuyuko, and the “Aki Sandwich” (秋サンド) which has Shizuka and Minoriko. Some years have no ingredients, making it not a sandwich, and some have more than one ingredient.

The “Touhou Project Popularity Poll” (東方Project人気投票, Tōhō Purojekuto Ninki Tōhyō) was called the “Touhou Series Populaity Poll” (東方シリーズ人気投票, Tōhō Shirīzu Ninki Tōhyō) up until 2015.

In the 1st popularity poll, the music poll was held first from 2003-02-13 to 2003-03-13, while the character poll was held from 2003-03-06 to 2004-04-06. The window was an entire month!

The voting period was shortened to 2 weeks in the 2nd, then every poll after this uses a one week period.

In 2018, the English community had a translator named “Clarste” who pushed for a Shizuha vote in order to “ruin” the Aki Sandwich… but in reality, it got more ingredients because, you know, it's a sandwich… A sandwich can have more than one ingredient.
