Aramaki Scarchinov

Aramaki Scarchinov (荒巻スカルチノフ, Aramaki Sukaruchinofu), often translated as Aramaki Scaltinof,1) is a blob-shaped AA character that originated in 2channel's /news4vip/ board around 2005. He didn't do much, but he's more likely to get eaten being salmon-like.

On August 7, 2002, a bearded seal dubbed Tama-chan (タマちゃん) was seen in the Tama River,2) which was peculiar since arctic seals usually don't visit Japan in the summer. This fascinated people, as a neutral distraction, and became a national phenomenon.3) Some time after, people made text artwork of this seal and, like with most text artwork, it would get edited and repurposed.

At some point, Tama-chan started walking on land and became “Hitahita” (ヒタヒタ),4) often seen trying to stab Toorimasu passing through on the right. Then, he fell and became “Bidaaaan!!!!” (ビダァァァン!!!!).

From there, the second part of “Bidaaaan!!!!” would become its own character and /news4vip/ users would name the new character, “Aramaki Scarchinov”, for a reason yet to be discovered.

“Aramaki” (荒巻) means “Salted Salmon”, while “Sukaruchinofu” (スカルチノフ) gets interpreted in many different ways. I interpret it as “Scarchinov” since “scar” and “chin” is obvious, then you have the “-nov” suffix which is a Slavic name suffix that early Japanese translators never caught onto.

“Hita-Hita” (ヒタヒタ) is the sound effect for somebody steadily approaching in this context.
