Aramaki Scarchinov

Aramaki Scarchinov (荒巻スカルチノフ, Aramaki Sukaruchinofu) is the blob-like, relaxed AA character that was a Hitahita variant, but users on 2channel's /news4vip/ board decided to separate him by 2005. Some older translations use 'Aramaki Scaltinof' or 'Salted Salmon'.

Hitahita with Toorimasu.

In 2002, a bearded seal named Tama-chan appeared in the Tama River and he became a national celebrity1)2) since arctic seals aren't typically expected in Japan's summer months. The seal received text artwork, then it was repurposed for a knife-wielding 'Hitahita' (ヒタヒタ) who could walk on land and attempts to stab Toorimasu. At some point, Hitahita fell and made a slamming 'bidān' (ビターン) sound.

At the time, /news4vip/ liked to give characters an 'interesting' name with a Japanese surname (e.g. George Nagaoka, Naito Horizon, Saito Matanki), and that hypothetical 'post ending in X' naming him followed suit. Now, we can infer that 'Aramaki' is a Ghost in the Shell reference,3) commonly mistranslated as 'salted salmon', while 'Scarchinov' is just Slavic-sounding.4)

To be specific, 'Aramaki' (荒巻) was likely named after 'Daisuke Aramaki' (荒巻 大輔, Aramaki Daisuke).

For some reason, older translators kept interpreting '-nov' (~ノフ, -nofu) as '-nof', seemingly unaware that 'Ivanov' becomes 'Iwanofu' (イワノフ), 'Petrov' becomes 'Petorofu' (ペトロフ), etc.
