Yaruo (やる夫) is an AA character that technically emerged around July 8, 2006,¹⁾ but its actual history spans back to December 3, 2005.²⁾ He was significantly popular from 2006 to 2015, especially within the Yaruo Threads where he commonly appears with fictional, copyrighted characters.

His name comes from his “That's why I'll do it on NewSoku!” (だからニュー速でやるお！, Dakara NyuSoku de Yaruo!) line, still using the '-o' (～お) verbal tic that used to be trendy on 2channel's /news4vip/ board. He is often partnered with Yaranaio, like a Mario–Luigi type duo.

In the beginning, Yaruo initially started out as an attempt to make a close-up of Naito Horizon on December 3, 2005,³⁾ but people thought the head was too phallic. He was later repurposed around July 8, 2006⁴⁾ in the context of an annoying user with a punchable face. Some users then spammed Yaruo in an attempt to provoke people, but it ended up amusing people instead and his popularity would spread far beyond /news/.

During his prime years, the Yaruo Threads had turned him into a 'famous actor' with many attractive qualities, thus making him popular with fictional women. This changed in the early 2010s as /news4vip/ had entered a decline, and Yaruo started getting pushback from people who didn't want to play along or grew resentful, which led to a whole Genocide Boom-style phenomenon of him getting slaughtered.

Furthermore, it was becoming difficult for AA to maintain 'relevance' in the age of smartphones as the phones don't typically come with an AA-compatible font, the 2channel userbase was not getting any younger since anonymity was a hard sell in the age of social media, and more convenient creative outlets existed. Therefore, Yaruo, once considered an important figure of the AA world, finally became obsolete around 2015.

Yarumi (やる実), or Yarubi (やる美), is a female version of Yaruo with the same attributes, except the fat was noticeably distributed to her large breasts and voluptuous body. She is Yaruo's younger sister or cousin, who can also be annoying, but her uplifting personality and appearance cancels it out. This idea of a younger sister was conceptualized in 2006, but the design wasn't refined until 2007.

As for the specific details, Yarumi is '152 cm' (≈ 5 ft) tall, weighs '50 kg' (≈ 110 lbs), and her three sizes are '92–67–84' (≈ 36.2–26.4–33.1). Her psychical attributes include: having a cute face, protruding teeth, large breasts, and knee-high socks. Most of the large-scale depictions of Yarumi are usually just recycled artwork of Kagura Tsuchimiya (Ga-Rei) or Suo Pavlichenko (Darker than Black) to name a few.

Yaruopoona (やるオプーナ, Yaruopūna), or Opoona (オプーナ), is an Opoona-themed variant of Yaruo, and the /ghard/ mascot, that would “give you the right to buy Opoona” at his wagon of discounted Opoona games. The story is that Koei released ArtePiazza's Opoona on the exact same day as Super Mario Galaxy,⁵⁾ which turned out to be a huge mistake and the reviews were mixed.

Yaruta (やる太) is a Yaruo variant that may depict Yaruo as a child or Yaruo's own child. The original Yaruta, created in March 2007, simply points and laughs. However, the current Yaruta, created in 2009, is a simpler child which appears to be a blend of Yaruo with Churuya-san from Nyorōn Churuya-san. Over time, the name would then be associated with the latter, presumably since it's significantly more neutral or versatile.
