World2ch

World2ch was an English bulletin board website, originally intended to be an international version of the Japanese 2channel. It was established by “RIR6” on March 14, 2003,1) gained some traction,2)3) then actually moved to the “world2ch.net” domain sometime around April 26, 2003.4)

History

The idea of an international version of 2channel began in an /event/ thread on August 5, 20025) where the tripcode user, “◆2chtOdqo” (later “◆hp2chtOdqo”), tried setting up Usa2ch, but it didn't last long due to server issues and eventually published the “Eng2ch” script on March 3, 2003.6) Shortly after, a tripcode user known as “◆RIR6uHX9bE” (“RIR6”) would set up World2ch at the “newswatch.cool.ne.jp” domain.7)

Later that month, news of World2ch spread to other 2channel boards,8)9) users felt motivated enough to fix the script's broken English, then RIR6 purchased the “world2ch.net” domain10) and eventually moved the website there on April 26, 2003.11) At some point, they somehow got some English users. Then, RIR6 had set up the first English imageboard with a translation of Futaba on June 1, 2003.12)13)

A second /event/ thread was made,14) but World2ch started having problems.15) On January 1, 2004, RIR6 stated that he would stop reading the /event/ thread and only respond to English criticism at World2ch.16) However, the last update was in February 200417) and RIR6 neglected the website after that.18) It eventually went down around May 2004,19) suggesting that they went offline after violating a server policy.20)

Notes

Notable persons

  • “RIR6” (◆RIR6uHX9bE) was World2ch's administrator. He lists “Taichirou Kosugi” (小杉太一郎) as his name,23) but this is a reference to a musician who worked on the 1968 Cyborg 009 anime.
    • “0073” mentions that “RIR6” would talk about news and politics,24) which coincides and confirms the fact that 2channel's /news/ board was the centerpiece of 2channel back then.
    • He had two Hatena blogs, “rir6” and “sjs7”, but he decided to delete them on September 11, 2008 for privacy reasons,25) though he also left a link to his Twitter account before doing so.26)
      • He currently goes by “Amamako” (あままこ) on Twitter at @amamako and @amyu1987. In one tweet, he does say that World2ch is something he'd like to forget.27)
    • His birthday is on November 18, 1987,28) meaning that he was 15-16 years old back when he ran World2ch. At the time of this writing, he's probably in his mid 30s.
  • “Keepweep”29) was a friendly Japanese user that made Flash videos, centered around Giko and Shii, during the Golden Age of Flash. He still runs weep.jp and shii.net, going by “Weepjp” now.
    • On Japanese Wikipedia, “Weepjp” is called “Onsei Ojisan” (音声おじさん), reportedly banned for persistent vandalism and numerous sockpuppet accounts.30)31)
  • “Golgolmois” (ごるごるもあ ◆753Z/RLFiY) was a Japanese nationalist who objected to the American military bases on Okinawa,32) but he was so bad at English33) that people made fun of him.34)35) Later on, he was arrested on November 5, 2003 in Osaka for making a bomb threat on 2channel back in June 22, 2003,36)37) which listed his real name as “Yasuo Chinen” (知念靖雄).38)
    • He is still active under “Golgolmois”, as well as some other aliases,39) and he has a Twitter account at @golgolmois. He currently lives in Minato-ku, Osaka near Mount Tenpō.
      • His birthday is on December 5, 1976, suggesting that he was 26 years old40) when he created the World2ch thread.41) He is now in his mid 40s at the time of this writing.
      • If you look further, you'll find out that he's a schizophrenic who thinks he can talk to aliens. At one point, he envisioned himself as an elf,42) thus the weird Twitter avatar.
    • His infamous “hey, hybrid american.” quote is likely “Hey, American mongrels!” mistranslated.43)
    • In the Japanese internet, he is known for pouring “bath salts” into the Tokyo Imperial Palace's moat, trying to dine at a McDonald's wearing nothing but cat ears and a collar, etc.

Miscellaneous

  • The “Lounge” board was originally /rounge/ but instead of correcting it, it became /entrance/.
  • To give you a general idea of the time period that World2ch occurred in:
  • For April Fools Day 2003, RIR6 had joked that he closed World2ch after it just got off the ground.46)
  • There was actually a third imageboard, “Anime”, which was made on December 7, 2003.47)
  • You can still see a peek of Shii's rant against Something Awful and 4chan in an archived version of the /pc/ board,48) but the Wayback Archive lost the thread somehow. It's been archived here.
  • World2ch's translated Eng2ch and Futaba scripts could be downloaded, but these are lost to time.

My personal theory is that somebody probably uploaded illegal images onto their imageboards, after their founder lost interest with the project, which forced the host to eventually step in.
