4chan /b/-day

/b/-day” was an uproar on 4chan's /b/ board, which occurred after the staff announced policy enforcement on August 23, 2006,1) sparking a massive wave of overreactions. In reality, nothing came out of it, but it did bring traffic to alternative websites and birthed the /i/ shenanigans.

History

In 2006, 4chan's /b/ board was starting to become known for website raiding and false threats, which attracted new dumbfounded users and brought upon the website's first generational strife. This eventually got out of hand, so a staff member announced that they would start banning users for illegal content on August 23, 2006, specifically combating the presence of child pornography (i.e. 'jailbait'), doxing, and raiding.2)

Policy Enforcement
Participating in a thread dealing with illegal content will get you globally banned for two weeks (thread starter is indefinitely banned). This means merely replying to it removes you from this site for a minimum of two weeks. This includes JB and any other “grey area” threads. Posting any piece of personal information or inciting/participating in an invasion of any sort will also get you, and anybody who replied to the thread globally banned. You have the option to either report or ignore (not reply to) threads that break the rules. Thanks!

Note: To clarify, this applies to THREADS breaking the rules, not REPLIES. If somebody breaks the rules in a REPLY the entire thread won't be banned. Again, exploiting this clause to break the rules will get you banned. These rules aren't anything new–we've just adopted a new way of enforcing them.

There is literally a “Ban thread” button now, so it isn't a chore to do. Abide by the rules and your own common sense.

This led to a massive overreaction, as people thought /b/ was literally 'rule-free', so the enraged users would crash the “img.4chan.org” server. In the aftermath, alternative websites saw a significant surge, including 7chan, 420chan, AnonIB, Dvach,3) WAKAchan, WTFux, etc. The “img.4chan.org” server was restored after two days and everything went back to normal, except /i/ now exists.

Notes

  • “/b/-day” was a pun on "D-Day", similar to how everything had to be an “Operation” back then.
  • This event led to the creation of 12chan in the following month.

"Policy Enforcement" (August 23, 2006). 4chan /b/.
3)
Dvach was a Russian website, but it did lead to a “Refuge” (Убежище) board being set up at /rf/ for users who were tired of all the yankees in /b/. It later became a board for social outcasts which is how it earned the name, “Hikkach” (Хиккач) as in Hikikomori, but this isn't the article to get into its history.
