IIchan (Wakachan)
This article is about old IIchan. For Russian IIchan, see IIchan.
IIchan, formerly Idlechan, was an English bulletin board website that was established on July 24, 2004,1) while Wakachan was a sister project that began around October 24, 20042) as a coalition project.3) The two projects merged with the announcement of “IIchan 3.0” in April 16, 2006.
The overall project did serve the original purpose of keeping their network alive, but there was some unspoken animosity between owners, declining interest, and script development just stopped. Eventually, both websites fell by 2015, leaving a unremarkable legacy.
History
2004–2005
A month after 4chan's fourth shut down on June 20, 2004,4) “Thock” established IIchan at “iichan.net” using the first instance of the Wakaba imageboard script on July 24, 2004. This didn't last long as 4chan would return in August 7, 2005.5) IIchan idled, became “IIchan 2.0” in September, then closed on October 24, 2004 due to a lack of funds. Before this, “Lain” starts up the Wakachan project on October 23, 2004.6)
Wakachan sets up an IIchan refuge board and “Thock” is allegedly quoted in an IRC channel, claiming that IIchan would be back in two weeks.7) This estimate didn't pan out since “Thock” became too preoccupied, then IIchan throws up a static “IIchan 2.1” page in December 2004 that primarily served as an advertisement for Wakachan since it was where their “IIchan 3.0” news was going.
2005–2010
IIchan was finally resurrected as “IIchan v3.0” on April 16, 20058) and Wakachan's “Lain” took over. Shortly after, the 4chan “/b/-day” event happened, then “Lain” jumped the gun on a possible merger with WTFux which caused “cho0b” to call off the merger.9) Following the confusion, “Blackmage” would take over in 2005, and IIchan/Wakachan eventually announced “IIchan 4.0” sometime around 2007.
An unrelated Russian IIchan emerged in June 1, 2007 and some of them started using English IIchan's /b/. While insignificant at first, English IIchan's /b/ slowly became a refuge for Russian users, especially after Dvach suddenly died on January 17, 2009 and Russian IIchan refused to take Dvach's leftovers. Per request, /b/ kept getting flooded, so /unyl/ was set up around May 24, 2009.10)
2010–2015
The last IIchan news post was written by “Humblefool” (Anon) on April 10, 2010. “!WAHa.06x36” released the last updates for Wakaba and Kareha in 2012,11) then IIchan fell by the end of 2012. Shortly after, Wakachan stood for a few more years before falling in 2015. There was a brief attempt to revive IIchan as “Idlechan”, but it was really just Shanachan compiling some random boards next to their boards before going down.

Surviving Boards
At this point in time, there isn't that many websites that used to be affiliated with Wakachan left and I believe it's better if I just link to the websites since there's no point in listing the “surviving” boards.
- ROTBRC - ROTBRC is still run by “Orochi Herman” somehow! They've added quite a number of boards since their affiliation with Wakachan, but that doesn't mean they have any activity.
Notes
- There's a few IIchan memes. For instance, the $540 thing, I guess.
- In one news post, Wakachan linked to chanwear.com in 2006, a merchandise website that sold simple black t-shirts with memes printed on them. This website lasted until 2018-ish.
