IIchan (Wakachan)

This article is about old IIchan. For Russian IIchan, see IIchan.

IIchan, originally Idlechan, was an English bulletin board website founded by “Thock” on June 23, 2004.1) Wakachan was a 'coalition' project2) that emerged around October 24, 2004.3) The two merged after their 'IIchan 3.0' announcement in April 16, 2006, then decayed until its death in 2015.

History

2004–2005

“It sucks that 4chan is dead, it really was one of the best websites on the internet, and it's a shame to see it die like it did, so i did something about it, idlechan was born, and here we are.”
– Thock4)

With 4chan's closure on June 20, 2004, “Thock” sets up Idlechan with the Futabally script on June 23, 2004, originally at the “idlechan.idlegames.org” and “idlechan.org” domains.5) Then on July 22, 2004, the website moved to “iichan.net” and switch to the Wakaba script.6)7) Shortly after, IIchan was issued a DMCA notice from HentaiKey and their PayPal account was closed on August 5, 2004,8)9) which 5chan took credit for.10)

After 4chan's eventual return,11)12) IIchan became 'IIchan 2.0' in September, then closed as it lacked funds on October 24, 2004. During this, “Lain” initiates the Wakachan project on October 23, 2004,13) an 'IIchan 3.0' refuge board was set up, and “Thock” gives his infamous 'two weeks' estimate.14) This estimate didn't pan out, so a static 'IIchan 2.1' page, promoting Wakachan, was propped up in December.15)

2005–2010

IIchan was eventually revived as 'IIchan 3.0' on April 16, 2005,16) and “Lain” took over. A couple months later, 4chan had that '/b/-day' event, then “Lain” apparently jumped the gun on a possible merger with WTFux so their 'deal' was called off,17) so “Blackmage” took over following the general confusion. In 2007, 'IIchan 4.0' was announced, and an unrelated Russian IIchan, splitting from Dvach, would surface on June 1, 2007.

Over the following years, English IIchan occasionally became a refuge for Russian IIchan, then came Dvach's sudden death on January 17, 2009. However, Russian IIchan did not want to take Dvach's refugees, forcing them to scatter about. Some of the Russian-speaking users would end up at English IIchan and they requested what eventually became the /unyl/ board around May 24, 2009.18)

2010–2015

The final IIchan news post was written by “Humblefool” (Anon) on April 10, 2010, “!WAHa.06x36” released the final Wakaba and Kareha updates in 2012,19) then IIchan's domain fell by the end of 2012 and Wakachan's domain followed suit in 2015, quietly ending the coalition. At the time of this writing, we are left with two former affiliates: 4-ch and ROTBRC, though the connection to the latter appears to be spotty for some reason.

List of Boards

TL;DR: 4-ch and ROTBRC are the only boards left.

Notes

  • Apparently, the PayPal account had $500–540, before 5chan's “Zabadab” snitched.20)21)
  • In one news post, Wakachan linked to chanwear.com in 2006, a merchandise website that once sold simple black t-shirts with memes printed on them. This website lasted until 2018-ish.
