GETchan

GETchan (/GET/) is an English bulletin board with a history that spans far back as May 14, 2011, but formally became an independent website on November 6, 2011. It has largely remained with co-founder “Comrade King” who has been with the website since its inception.

History

2011–2014

The community started out as a serial GET thread on Ponychan's /oat/ board on May 14, 2011, then moved over to Ponychan's /chat/ board for its 150th thread on July 15, 2011 since the staff didn't like that it was becoming a place for casual discussion. On November 6, 2011, “Comrade King” and “Steven Magnet” set up GETchan at “GETchan.tymoon.eu” where it shared servers with Stevenchan.

Due to conflicts between GETchan and Stevenchan, GETchan split and would formally become independent on January 10, 2012 when it moved to “GETchan.net” and took its copy of Kusaba X with it. However, these events coincided with Ponychan closing their /ef/ board, resulting in an invasion of GETchan until Efchan had surfaced, then war between GETchan and Efchan followed.

In response, GETchan arranged the Lunachan Pact1) and set up the United Chans.2) Out of nowhere, some GETchan moderators sabotaged the website on March 11, 2013 and created Oniichan on March 13, 2013. This resulted in a large war of GETchan, Dubschan, and the Refugee Camp versus Oniichan and Efchan, but Oniichan shut down after a full year and Efchan ended up joining the United Chans on May 5, 2014.

2015–2019

After the war, a period of stagnation began. On January 24, 2015, GETchan tried to establish the USSC3) at “ussc.su” where 8chan's /leftypol/, GETchan's /GET/, and /ref/ would unite under one. However, plans fell through and GETchan returned to “getchan.net” on September 28, 2015. Soon after, Lunachan merged into GETchan on November 5, 2015, bringing over Zeke Roa's Gochan project.

There was even a website tutorial on GETchan's YouTube channel,4) but nothing changed. By the month of November 2018, GETchan decided to move into Bunkerchan, refusing a full reunification of Ponychan. But then, on August 5, 2019, the fall of 8chan forced /leftypol/ to migrate to Bunkerchan, and moving /leftytrash/ from /leftypol/ to /GET/ on August 17, 2019 would finally breathe some life into GETchan.

2020–

However, life on Bunkerchan wasn't good as it looked. “Comrade King” resigned on February 22, 2020 and we were left to believe he felt alienated, transferring ownership of /GET/ and /ref/ to “Zeke Roa”. Then on August 17, 2020, the “GETchan Liberation Front” (GLF) would suddenly take over the “getchan.net” domain, swap out “Kusaba X” for “Lainchan”, and try to liberate GETchan once more.

On November 6, 2020, the th anniversary of GETchan, “Comrade King” returned to power and GETchan returned to its former “Kusaba X” glory,5) though most people were unaware of this development. Then on December 21, 2020, a majority of Bunkerchan's staff is fired for defying “Space_”,6)7)8) resulting in the split to Leftypol.org, and more information is revealed on why “Comrade King” ultimately left Bunkerchan.9)

Since the moderators for the GETchan section of Bunkerchan were also swept up, the GETchan community on Bunkerchan ended up in a weird spot, but the community agrees to split and return to “GETchan.net”.10) With the grand reunification of GETchan, “Zeke Roa” takes time on December 25, 2020 to upgrade the board software from “Kusaba X” to a “Tinyboard” fork also used on Ponychan.

Refugee Camp

The Refugee Camp (/ref/) was an offshoot of 4chan's /int/ board that was set up by “Boris Grishenko” on February 4, 2013 under the “ibm5100.net” domain11) as a place to collect rare flags. These activities were usually thwarted by nationalists and janitors who probably thought rare flags were proxies, so /ref/ adopted a communist stance and initiated the /int/ uprising on June 18, 2013 to get the /int/ janitor ousted.

During this time, GETchan came into contact with /ref/ and later provided them a board when /ref/ went down on July 14, 2013. They added two new boards, /his/ and /news/, in attempt to get more traffic and GETchan helped them get some advertising on 4chan. However, the Refugee Camp vanished in the month of July 2015 and the community has been in the hands of GETchan ever since.
